The Carbon Catcher
The Carbon Catcher
The story so far...
The Problem...
In the Humber region of the UK, energy-intensive industries like power, steel, chemicals, glass, and refined fuels are essential for the economy. However, these industries produce a lot of carbon dioxide during production, which is a greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change. In fact, the Humber region alone produces 20 million tonnes of carbon dioxide each year, making up 5% of the UK's total emissions.
The Solution...
To address the problem of carbon dioxide emissions, the Humber region has developed a plan to use carbon capture and storage technology. This technology will capture carbon dioxide emissions from industrial sites and store them offshore permanently. Each site will have a carbon capture plant designed to remove carbon dioxide from waste streams. The clever part of the plan is a pipeline that connects the industrial emitters to enable the efficient transport of carbon dioxide.
The Capture...
The carbon dioxide emissions captured by each site will be transported offshore for permanent storage in old gas reservoirs and saline aquifers. The Humber region has many offshore stores licensed to store carbon dioxide, providing a safe and effective way to manage emissions. This ambitious plan involves billions of pounds of investment in infrastructure and will make the Humber region the first industrial cluster in the UK to reach net zero emissions by 2040.
The Future...
The Humber Industrial Cluster Plan has the potential to create tens of thousands of jobs in the region and transform it into a leader in sustainable industry. By improving carbon capture and storage technology and exploring how it can enable hydrogen production and greenhouse gas removals, the plan will ensure a sustainable future for the Humber region. Additionally, it could enable the region to import carbon dioxide from other clusters with less access to suitable storage, making it a vital part of the UK's efforts to tackle climate change.
